Austen McFarren, LPCC-S

Biography

Austen earned his Bachelors in Secondary English Education in 2014, and his Masters of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2016, from Minnesota State University Moorhead. He is currently a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Austen has worked in the mental health field for eight years. He has spent the majority of those years in the front lines in crisis work, supporting adults, teens, and children through some of the darkest days of their lives. Through this humanistic approach, Austen has walked with clients through many hopeless situations, and has worked with them to find a life worth living.

Counseling Approach and Clinical Focus:

Austen also has over two years of individual therapy experience with young adults, helping them to find a sense of independence, while they try to find their identity. As a LGBTQIA+ ally, Austen has supported many during phases of gender transition, gender questioning, sexuality questioning, and the unpredictable family and social dynamics that often follow.

Austen also specializes in treating chronic pain conditions and physical and intellectual limitations. Austen has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy since the age of three, and has undergone numerous operations. Austen knows through personal experience that chronic pain adds a complicated dimension to mental health struggles. Having a mental and/or physical disability complicates social and family relationships, as well as our sense of productivity in our home and work life. These limitations can also make it more difficult to find purpose in life. Austen has found his purpose through helping people like you find yours, despite your own personal limitations.

Austen’s clients describe him as gentle, patient, genuine, non-judgmental, warm, flexible, sarcastic, and witty. Austen’s clinical foundation is in humanistic approaches, while also utilizing tools from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Narrative Therapy.

Austen has been the greatest therapist I’ve had the chance to meet with. He’s very kind and understanding, patient, and generally a warm and funny person to boot. Thanks to him and his supportive and compassionate approach, I’ve made great progress in my journey of recovery over the past few years, and it’s also thanks to him I was able to get my top surgery last year in 2025. Absolutely amazing practitioner, I always recommend him when I see people asking about for therapist suggestions.

My family has had the privilege of working with Austen for the past two years, and during that time, we’ve seen remarkable progress in the well-being of my two teenage daughters. Austen has been a tremendous asset in helping my daughters navigate their struggles with anxiety and depression. As any parent knows, watching your children face these challenges can be heartbreaking, but Austen’s compassionate and professional approach has made all the difference. My daughters feel heard and supported. Austen has created a safe space for them to open up, where they feel understood without judgment. His ability to connect with teenagers, especially in a therapeutic setting, is truly exceptional.
